Confession scenes were a favorite among the Victorians. Nearly all of Oscar Wilde's plays contained some kind of confession scene, so it only seems natural that Dicksee would chose to portray one too. Dicksee left this painting intentionally ambiguous, not telling us if it was the woman or the man confessing to an affair.
